Once upon a time, I walked into a supermarket to buy some groceries. I walked over to the vegetable aisle looking for potatoes, cos potatoes gonna potate. First ones I saw were Australian potatoes, RM7.50 per kg and I think to myself, are potatoes supposed to be this expensive? I walked two steps and saw USA potatoes, RM10.50 per kg. Walao, were they fertilized with money?
But I persevered, and finally found China potatoes, RM4.90 per kg. Wow now that's what you call potatoes.
-please persevere like me and continue reading my potato story-
So I grabbed the nearest plastic bag and started to shovel the potatoes into the bag. I only got like four of them, that previous statement was an exaggeration. Then I had to get them weighed because in Malaysia the cashier doesn't weigh anything, and if you still insist on giving them a bag of unweighed potatoes they're going to scream across the supermarket 'ah zai tolong kasi timbang ini!'. Then you'll hold up the line and everyone is going to scan you.
-this is getting long winded-
Now, all the employees wear red uniforms in that supermarket. I circled the weighing station a few times and as usual nobody is there. I pretended to be interested in the vegetables nearby, but still nobody came to the weighing station. Then, I saw a guy wearing a red uniform checking out fruits next to the station. Finally a staff! I went up to him and asked, 'excuse me, boleh tolong timbang?' He called out to a younger guy nearby also wearing the red uniform, and told me, 'bukan saya yang timbang,'. In the end I got the potatoes weighed and went to pay for them.
AND PLOT TWIST,
The first guy whom I asked to help me weigh them was queueing in the other cashier.
That was so embarrassing I'm pretty sure I cannot go back to that supermarket again. Though I never found out what company was that guy working for, it was definitely not that supermarket.
ANOTHER PLOT TWIST,
The potatoes I bought were actually Holland potatoes.
