Being nervous about something, worrying about it, thinking over and over again about it in your mind, it doesn't have a switch where you can turn it on and off whenever you want. We wish we could, but the truth is it's just not possible. You can only sweep something away into the back of your head, but unless you deal with it it's just gonna keep growing and resurface even worse than before. That's why it's unreasonable to just tell someone 'hey why don't you stop overthinking'.
It. Never. Works.
Telling someone not to think too much is like someone telling you not to think about a pink polar bear. See, you just thought about the weird pink polar bear fighting for breast cancer. Uhh maybe not the breast cancer part just because it's pink oops. So basically telling an overthinker that they're thinking too much just makes them think about overthinking. Hooray. And then it's like opening a portal to the 4th dimension where they just get sucked into their own mind.
Sometimes it's not a choice, people are different, and part of them happens to ruminate on the things others find insignificant. Notice how there's also a tiny part that don't use their brains most of the time. Sometimes it's a habit, like if you were taught to crawl all your life, you'd think walking is super awkward and you'd probably not do it very much. That is also why everyone walks instead of crawl, that's just what you've been doing for most of your life. Besides, crawling on the streets is creepy.
But so what if people say overthinking is weird like crawling is creepy, you don't just suddenly go OH HEY I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT JUST STOPPING MY OVERTHINKING MIND. THANK YOU KIND STRANGER WHO POINTED OUT THAT PINK POLAR BEAR, NOW ALL I CAN DO IS THINK ABOUT IT.
